Greenwood Chinchillas
Which Beige Is My Chin?
Beige colouration has two types: Hetero and Homo
Homo beige colouring is more pale milky cream - but can be darker
Hetero Beige is generally sandy coloured - but again can vary.
The real difference is in the genetics and the only way to be sure is to breed from the animal.
A Hetero beige has one beige and one standard gene - so will produce 50% standard and 50% hetero beige kits when paired to a standard.
Homo Beige have two Beige genes (no standard) - so when paired to a standard will always produce hetero Beige babies (one standard and one beige gene)

Lets over simplify things and say every chin is made up of two genes - the combination of which make the colour (i'm ignoring recessives like violet combined with beige for this!)
· A standard is made up of Standard gene 1 and standard gene 2
· Hetero Beige is made up of Standard Gene and Beige Gene
· Homo Beige is made up of Beige Gene 1 and Beige Gene 2
So any kit that is born has one gene from each parent - so the combinations are what produce the confusion.
If DAD is Homo Beige we have Dad Beige Gene 1 and Dad Beige Gene 2
If MUM is Hetero Beige we have Mum Standard Gene and Mum Beige Gene
The kits from any Homo beige will always have a beige gene so will always be beige - but if mum also has a beige gene could be homo beige.
So from this pair we have:
Dad Beige Gene 1 + Mum Gene Std = Hetero Beige Kit
Dad Beige Gene 2 + Mum Gene Std = Hetero Beige Kit
Dad Beige Gene 1 + Mum Gene Beige = Homo Beige Kit
Dad Beige Gene 2 + Mum Gene Beige = Homo Beige Kit
So we have 4 options as to what the kits will be - 2 out of 4 will be Hetero beige ( Std / Bg & Bg / Std) and 2 will be homo (bg / bg) - so 50% Hetero Beige and 50% homo beige

If MUM is Hetero Beige we have Mum Standard Gene and Mum Beige Gene
The kits from any Homo beige will always have a beige gene so will always be beige - but if mum also has a beige gene could be homo beige.
So from this pair we have:
Dad Standard + Mum Gene Std = Standard Kit
Dad Beige Gene 2 + Mum Gene Std = Hetero Beige Kit
Dad Standard Gene + Mum Gene Beige = Hetero Beige Kit
Dad Beige Gene 2 + Mum Gene Beige = Homo Beige Kit
So we have 4 options as to what the kits will be - 2 out of 4 will be Hetero beige and 1 will be standard, and 1 will be homo beige - so 50% Hetero Beige and 25% each of standard and homo beige
