Greenwood Chinchillas

History of Chinchillas -

Charcoal

The history of the charcoal seems to be shrouded in mystery as to exactly where and how it has been developed, though it is clear that the current charcoal that we have today is the product of many different mutations that have appeared at varying ranches but have then been interbreed - from these the ebony has also been developed.

Charcoals tend be be accredited to the following breeders and appearance of mutation animals - all based in California:  Betty Broucke, Wes Olson, R Somavia, W Pohl, and T  Ready.  Additionally further developments occured at the ranch of Lloyd Sakrison in Minnesota (1963 -Curly Brown Charcoal)

Charcoals vary a great deal in the depth of colour that they  have - and in many cases at first glance can appear to be Hetero Ebonies.

Charcoals whilst once more common and more readily available have become more scarce with the introduction of the ebony and its growth and promotion.

True charcoals are now very difficult  to find - many having been interbreed with charcoals to try and deepen there colours - a huge mistake to have made and one which has ruined many lines of charcoals for future breeding.

Ebonies being a more gloss/shiny fur seem to have taken precedence within the pet shop market and as such charcoals have fallen into disfavour.

True charcoals are a recessive colour, and when breed to standards produce pure white bellied charcoal carriers - ebonies will produce muddy bellied offspring.
