Bought from Heaven Chinchillas, Dahlia was ordered as a Male, and when collected and brought home was believed to be so! I didn't think to check the sex at the time - so was actually called Mandrake for her first week at Greenwood Chinchillas.

Only when I was taking some belly photographs for use upon this site did i then notice that the genitals were not as they should be!  So she hastily got renamed Dahlia.

This did produce a problem - i had bought in a charcoal carrying female, called Maize, who I intended to pair her with to bred more charcoals - of course this could not now take place.  but worse still, when I had ordered Dahlia I was warned that she was small, this in a male is not a major problem as you simply breed to big blocky females.  However when the female is too small it is dangerous to breed from her.  The breeder did offer to buy her back from me, but she is such a personality I didn't want to part with her.

Thankfully she did have a late growth spurt and grew large enough to breed so was paired up to Merlin a really freindly older standard male chin that we have here. They settled down together well and did produce a litter of kits.  The kits had dark bellies at birth so there are concerns that there could be some ebony genes in her line which would make her unsuitable for charcoal breeding.  It remains to be seen if this tinge disappears as they grow as can happen with some recessive kits.

Kits to date:
