Named after the Desert tree and not the escapologist, Houdini, is the biggest kit born to date at Greenwood Chinchillas - weighing a whopping 68g at birth. He was born actually in his mums sand bath! She only had it in the cage for 20 minutes went back and he was there!
At birth Houdini's right eye did not open, I tried soaking the lids with cooled boiled water on a cotton bud but it didn't loosen enough to be prised open. I repeated the exercise in the morning and still no luck - so trip to the vets was undertaken. Where he just repeated what I had done and it opened - I think he was just a bit more forceful! Following a few days antibiotic cream the eye was totally clear and healthy with no lasting after effects.
Unfortunately following this it was also discovered that Houdini had a large abscess on his back, this though unsightly and large - did with anti-biotics and three times a day cleansing clear up totally and completely and did not effect his rapid growth rate.
He was viewed on 14-4-04 and been sold to a new chinchilla keeper who required a quality male for possibly breeding from in the future. They remain in touch and he has settled in well.
