Saffron arrived with Arum from Rojo Chinchillas in January 2004 as they were offered at a very good price, Sapphires were not a colour that I had ever intended to get into - with them being distinctly weak in this country and generally being expensive to obtain quality specimens. I was extremely lucky to be offered this two, as they are from the strongest lines that currently exist in this country.
For a mutation female, Saffron is very large, and is a very friendly animal. She loves to snuggle up in our arms when getting a treat, but was a bit shy about coming out of her cage for a run round when she first arrived. These days she is always eager to come out for a run and often will sit still for a while to be stroked under her chin or tickled under an arm pit.
I have been approached by a number of sapphire breeders, with a view to purchasing Saffron for their own herds, but to I have declined. Saffron is of a quality and size that would be very difficult for me to replace if I was to part with her - she is also a prolific breeder producing large and healthy kits -something I have been warned can be a problem in many sapphire related stock lines.
She is hopefully to be one of the foundation animals upon which I hope to base some good genetic work by breeding to the best quality carriers I can breed or buy to increase the strength and quality of the Sapphires as a colour mutation. She is present still paired to Arum the sapphire male as to date I have been unable to find a carrier male of sufficient quality to pair to her, and it seems pointless to use a lower quality male when what is needed with in sapphire lines is the strongest possible combinations of animals..
