Generally this is not a problem, but on occasion a chinchilla can take it into its head that the play product is food and set about eating it with a vengeance. In small amounts this will cause no major problems, but in cases where they choose to eat it intensely it can cause problems with digestion. You will notice if something is wrong by your chinchillas droppings.
As your chin does tear parts off this type of toy remove it from the cage and discard the loose parts.
To over come this feed your chin a couple of raisins to act as a laxative, increase the amount of hay they have available and reduce pellets, also remove the straw toy to cease there further eating of it
